In seventeenth century Europe, a fashionable woman of means had one or more Parures--a collection of at least three matching pieces of jewelry suitable to wear for social occasions.
A Parure might include a necklace, comb, rings, bracelets, pins, earrings, brooch and a belt clasp. Two pieces of matching jewelry were referred to as a demi-parure.
Fast-forward to the twenty-first century and jewelry sets are popular with many women. Today's jewelry set usually includes a necklace, bracelet and earrings. A demi-parure would likely include a necklace and a pair of earrings.

These three pieces "match" in that they have the same basic design, use the same stones and beads, and while the pieces work well as a set, each individual piece is beautiful on it's own.
